On May 7, 2010, CLS students in 2nd grades and 3rd grades visited the Baltimore Museum of Industry, learning about the incredible amount of industry and inventions originating from Baltimore and viewing demonstrations of metalworking and blacksmithing, printing, and garment making.
The museum is located on the Baltimore Harbor waterfront near the Domino Sugar Factory in the old Platt Oyster Cannery. After lunch, each student assumed the identity of a cannery worker and got to work at various skilled or unskilled jobs in the cannery -- shucking oysters; printing labels; making, labelling and filling cans; steaming cans; packing the finished product; or playing the boss. With their pay (from 1 to 5 "tokens") they chose items from Mr. Platt's Company Store (the only place they could spend their tokens), spending all their pay for "necessities" like food and rent, just to get through another week.
