Can You Haiku? Fifth Grade Presents Poetry Tea |
Parents and visitors to Shirley Fetcho's Fifth Grade classroom were treated on March 11th to tea and entertained with poetry written, read, and performed by students. The event was one of many that took place at Carroll Lutheran School during Lutheran Schools Week.
In a unit that kicked off with a field trip to the "Roots of Rap" presentation at Goucher College, students read and interpreted different types of verse and then wrote their own. After tangling with tough terms like haiku, meter, couplet, and alliteration, they produced a fine assortment of pieces that were truly and uniquely their own.Visitors left with a book of select verses written by each student.
The compilation has been revised (already!) for online publication, with each student's recent watercolor artwork added to his or her page. Concurrent with the poetry study, students were closely studying and following the Iditarod Race, as can be seen from their artwork and in many of their verses.
Grab a cup of tea and take the time to enjoy this beautiful and "colorful" reminder of the joys of poetry! View the 2010 Author's Tea Poetry Collection...
