In March of this year, the CLS Sixth Grade attended the week-long Carroll County Outdoor School at Hashawa, learning about everything from raptors to recycling and Ecology to Environmental Investigation. Students bunked in cabins and enjoyed the great outdoors at all hours (including nighthikes where they spotted deer and friendly beavers). A highlight of the week was the Predator Game, in which each had to take an active part of the ecosystem and work hard to survive.
ILA teacher Nicolette Coffey took part and observed:
“Outdoor School is such a rich experience for sixth graders. I’m so glad the students at Carroll Lutheran School have the opportunity to experience the environmental education offered there. They grow a lot during the week and many become aware of their world in a way they never were before.”
Reportedly a good time was had by all, as can be seen from the student comments and photos:
“It was really, really, really, really, fun!” said Emily Bell.
“It was fun playing and hiking in the rain,” declared Bradley Gilmore.
“It was the best week ever!” exclaimed Austin Wilson.
“I wish I never had to leave!” lamented Brendan McCormick.
“I met a lot of new friends and enjoyed spending time with old friends, too.” recalled Jessica Becke.
“I loved how we got to meet new friends and learn about the environment while having fun,” said Sophia Hayes.
“I like seeing and learning about the cool birds and snakes.” stated Chandra Reiff.
“I really liked the survivor game (called Wildlife Simulation) on the last day,” said Kris Barmoy.
“I enjoyed the reptile room and holding the terrapins and “Bubbles” the snake,” declared Emily Bell.
“It was fun hiking and seeing the environment,” remembered Chandra Reiff.
“I’m looking forward to building a bird house with my dad now,” said Sophia Hayes.
