The Annual CLS Consignment Sale is one of our largest fundraisers. Maybe that explains why people dug themselves out after 2 weeks of being snowed in during Winter 2010 to bring their stuff to the sale, volunteer and shop. Each year we pack the Westminster Ag Center to the limit with baby and maternity items, toys and books, kid's clothes, and more for the one-day sale. The 2009-2010 Fifth Grade class established a bluebird trail around the school and wetlands in Spring 2010. Dave Flickinger, grandfather of student Brendan McCormick, created bluebird house kits out of high-quality and durable Cedar and help kickoff the project by guiding the students through the construction of the houses. The students studied bluebird facts and nesting habits in class and also created nesting balls filled with recycled materials to hang near the houses.

On Day Two of the project, the kids attached houses to recycled PVC pipe donated by Thom Becke with help from James Bell and Joseph McCormick.

Finally on Day Three, students placed the houses around the back of the school and the wetlands area below the Outdoor Classroom. Within days, avian families were seen moving in and enjoying the homes. A bluebird trail map will be forthcoming to allow everyone to walk the trail and see the activity.

On May 7, 2010, CLS students in 2nd grades and 3rd grades visited the Baltimore Museum of Industry, learning about the incredible amount of industry and inventions originating from Baltimore and viewing demonstrations of metalworking and blacksmithing, printing, and garment making.

On November 11, 2009, CLS honored the Veteran's of America with a formal program of recognition and prayer, followed by classroom visitations. Each classroom hosted a number of Veteran's, who shared memories and memoriabilia hands-on with the children. No matter what the age, the children were fascinated by the visitors and found it an honor to meet them. The following photos show Mrs. D's First Graders interacting with their Veteran guests.

In October 2009, CLS students in 3rd through 8th grades visited the River Valley Ranch for some Fall Fun.

In October 2009, CLS students in K through 2nd grades visited Spring Meadows Farm for some Fall Fun.

Mrs. D's First Graders visited the Catoctin Zoo in May 2009; each student wrote and illustrated a page about their day's adventures and favorite animals.

Field Day takes place near the end of the school year, with a day of fun and games for students, staff, parents and visitors. There is definitely never a dull moment.

The Living Wax Museum is a favorite project with most CLS students. After studying an influential person in-depth, each student writes a speech describing their contribution and presents themselves to parents, students, and visitors. Each appears "authentically" dressed with an exhibit describing more about themselves. This is one of the times that the parents get to push the kid's buttons (to activate their "live" presentation)!
